Dyslexia update

A couple of posts ago I talked about Charley probably being dyslexic. While he cant officially be assessed till he turns 7 in September, his teachers and I have been trying out some things that are commonly used for dyslexics and amazingly enough they are making his life a whole lot easier.

Dyslexia is a broad term defining a learning disability that impairs a person's fluency or accuracy in being able to read, speak, and spell. Dyslexia does not affect a human's intelligence in how they learn or memorize information. {taken from Wikipedia}

Because a few people have asked how the tinted strip was going for him I figured an update is required! The strip is proving to be priceless, Charley will now sit and read for hours using it. He is eager to do his reading and words after school, he will read most of the book at bedtime and he’ll sit happily on his bed and read whatever he fancies. There are words that are just not in his age capability to read yet but he is showing so much more interest in trying to read them.

Charley will do more writing than before. He loves to draw and write letters and stories but over time any sort of writing just dwindled out. Now he plays picture games with Kirsten:

They write notes to each other, he’s made his own thank you cards {for some  people at church} and is planning on making his own Valentine cards this weekend! According to him, he can do anything that Jesus Christ wants him to do!

At school the teachers have skipped him up by 4 levels of reading books! One or two was fine, I kinda expected it but four?! He is a naturally intelligent boy and excels in all areas, now he has reading to add to his list! His one teacher said she expects Charley to sit for a scholarship come year 6 if he carries on like this.

Dyslexia is not a closed door, its a hurdle and given that my oldest son has found his way round it I know Charley will do the same!
