Twice a year The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints hold a General Conference where we get guidance and inspired revelation from many of our church leaders. For those that are not in Salt Lake City to be there in person, many watch it via satellite broadcast at their Stake Centres or, like me, at home. However it is listened to or watched depends on what works for the family but it is an event that really should be prepared for in advance to be able to get the most out of it.
We watch most of the sessions online whilst in pj’s, eating a range of nibbles and lounging on my bed! Charley will either play with his toys and raise his head occasionally to ask a question about what he’s just heard or, in the last session, he has worked through the various GC packets that have been available to download.
The next General Conference is 2nd and 3rd October and now is the time to begin preparation if you haven’t done so already.
If you want a totally awesome website to go to with your kids where they can read the scriptures at their level, play scriptural games, download all sorts of wonderful things and even Family Home Evening lessons then you need to visit here:
If you are a facebooker, you will find them on there too, I urge you to follow because Angela really does work hard for this super amazing site! Charley loves to cuddle up on my lap and listen to the Book of Mormon Stories or work through games, download printable colouring pages and generally have fun there.
So what will your General Conference preparation look like?
Ours will go something like this:
Family Home Evening
Printing and binding of relevant packets, colouring pages, quizzes and other relative stuff
Food planning so we dont need to cook during the sessions we want to focus on.
Invite a family or friends over to share the messages (in which case we’d need to get dressed I guess ~ or we could declare a General Conference Slumber Party!!
Find the cable to hook the computer up to the big screen tv for maximum effect. Maybe.
Focus our family prayers towards what we feel we need to receive from the conference. Pray for our leaders, our Prophet and anything else that is relevant to maximise the benefit of the talks.
Keep our thoughts focussed on the Lord that little bit more, boost our ability to hear, ponder, understand and take on the messages relevant to us to enhance our lives and ourselves.
Prepare music for in between sessions. Keeping the spirit at its highest will help with personal revelations and understanding.
Sounds like hard work right? Nope, it really isn’t. It’s no different to getting the kids ready to go back to school or plan a holiday. In fact this is much better because we are working towards goals that can only really be made with the help and guidance of a loving Heavenly Father.
I will share the kids General Conference Packets in the next day or so, along with some other fun stuff from Scriptures4kids!
